On June 18, 1812, the United States declared war on Great Britain and for three years Niagara was a warzone. Had the United States defeated the British Canada may not exist today! At least not as we currently know it. When you explore the Niagara Historical Society Museum you will be taken back through time and experience what life was like in these turbulent times.

It’s a great way to educate the family or a group of geography or history students. The society runs a variety of events to provide educational activities for visitors, from lectures to musical performances. If you are taking a trip from Toronto to Niagara this is a great place to learn and have fun!

The Niagara Falls Museum is the amalgamation of four historical societies: Niagara Falls History Museum, Willoughby Historical Museum, Battleground Hotel Museum, and Lundy’s Lane Battlefield.

In 1971 the museum took over the old Stamford Town Hall which was erected back in 1874. In 2009 the museum closed for a $12 million renovation and reopened in July 21, 2012 with an 18,000 square foot expansion.

The renovation was built to house three exhibit areas which showcase the vast history of the Niagara region, totaling over 24,000 artifacts.

Explore the rich history and culture of the Niagara region. The Niagara Falls History Museum is separated into three distinct sections with one section being used as a rotating exhibit.

The first section is dedicated to the War of 1812 between the Americans and the modern day Canadian side. It is filled with historical items of the war and displays a timeline of how the war was fought with temporary victories for both sides.

You can try on the wool garments that the soldiers wore and even carry a replica musket which brave soldiers used to carry into battle.

The second section is a historical record of all the major events that happened from the 1900’s to present day.

You can walk across the ‘tight-rope above the falls’ exhibit or build a bridge across the falls. See how life progressed through exhibits beginning in the early 1900’s to present day.

The third section is a temporary gallery that contains travelling exhibits from other museums which usually changes 3 to 4 times a year.

Past exhibits have been “Ordinary Lives, Extraordinary Times: Italian Canadian Experiences During World War II”, “Fakes and Forgeries”, and “Electricity” from the Ben Franklin Institute, Philadelphia, United States of America.

There’s always something new to learn at the Niagara Falls History Museum.
