On October 7, 1829, Sam Patch, known as “The Yankee Leaper,” became the first daredevil to challenge the Niagara River.
The 22-year-old from Rhode Island dove from a platform at a height of 85 feet. Mr. Patch chose Goat Island to make his leap into history. He survived this headfirst high dive unscathed.
Ten days later, on October 17, 1829, he made a second successful dive from a higher platforom at a height of roughly 130 feet.
Following his dive at Niagara Falls, Sam Patch went to Rochester where he attempted a 100-foot dive into the Genesee River. During this dive, Patch died by drowning. His body washed up 4 months later 7 miles downstream.
