When visitors choose to take a vacation trip to Niagara Falls, one of the main places that they choose to visit is Rainbow Bridge. This is because Rainbow Bridge is the gateway between the two Niagara Falls cities of Niagara Falls, New York and Ontario, Canada.
The bridge can be crossed by auto, foot, or by bicycle. Pedestrians and cyclists can cross the bridge for a low fare of just 50 cents! Vehicles are slightly higher and rates are subject to change per year.
The construction of Rainbow Bridge began in May of 1940. The bridge opened on November 1, 1941. The bridge is 950 feet long and 202 feet tall. The water current speed under the bridge ranges between 26-31 miles per hour.
It is estimated that approximately 6 billion pounds of water cross under the Rainbow Bridge within the span of one minute. The abutements for the bridge are 50 feet about water to prevent ice in the river from damaging the bridge. This is incidentally what destroyed the previous Honeymoon Bridge in January of 1938.
