LINCOLN BEACHY
1911
(Survived)
Lincoln Beachy was born in San Francisco in 1887. Beachy built his own dirigible (airship) by the age of 18.
In June 1911, he piloted the first airplane over Niagara Falls. He took off from an airfield in Niagara Falls, New York. While gradually climbing into the sky, Beachy circled his plane over the falls several times. He then dove down into the mist of the falls, coming within 20 feet of the water’s surface.
He completed his performance by flying under the arch of the Falls View Honeymoon Bridge, becoming the first person to fly under a Niagara Falls bridge.
A master aerial stuntman, he performed various other daredevil stunts. He died at the young age of 28 while performing a stunt over the San Francisco Bay. It took rescuers nearly 2 hours to salvage him and his monoplane from the bay.
Autopsy reports revealed he had survived the crash with a broken leg, but drowned as he was unable to free himself from the restraints that were supposed to save him.
