CAPTAIN MATTHEW WEBB
1883
(Died)
Captain Matthew Webb was born in Shropshire, England in 1848. At the age of 12 years, he enrolled as a sea cadet on the naval training ship, the HMS Conway in Liverpool, England.
On August 24, 1875, Webb became the first recorded person to swim the English Channel without the use of artificial aids.
In 1883, he decided to swim the Niagara River Whirlpool Rapids. A small boat took him to the middle of the Niagara River where he dove into the river and began swimming towards the great Whirlpool Rapids.
Eye witnesses claim that Captain Webb made it through the rapids only to be sucked into the whirlpool. There are conflicting eye witness accounts as to whether Captain Webb drowned in the rapids or in the whirlpool. His battered body was recovered 4 days later.
Captain Webb was buried at Oakwood Cemetery in Niagara Falls, New York.
