In October 1901, Annie Taylor, a schoolteacher, became the first person and woman to go over the Horseshoe Falls in a barrel.
She made her journey in a barrel made of oak and held together by iron hoops. It had padding on the inside. The barrel was towed out from Grass Island and released. It then floated to the Canadian side and over the Horseshoe Falls.
When the tightly fitted lid was cut away, Mrs. Taylor emerged without any major injuries.
She made a decent living posing for photograhs and selling picture postcards of heself and her barrel, but died penniless.
She passed away in 1921 and is buried in the historic Oakwood Cemetry.
