Niagara Falls will disappear…but not anytime soon! Erosion, which is the process of wearing away substances, occurs in different ways with regards to the Niagara Falls.

The flow of water over the underlying rocks strip away the minerals (which is why the Niagara Falls water is a Green colour) which strengthen the underlying rock which cause the rock to break. Yearly freezing and thawing of the Niagara Falls lead to rocks breakage.

The rate of erosion has recently slowed due to a layer of durable limestone which is far more resistant to erosion than other rocks. However, estimates predict that the Falls will take approximately 23,000 years to disappear into Lake Erie.

The Niagara Falls has never ‘dried up’ but it has stopped flowing in the past. On March 29, 1848 strong winds pushed ice into Lake Erie.

Millions of tonnes of ice gathered and packed tightly at the mouth of the Niagara River and stopped the flow of water to the Niagara River which feeds the Niagara Falls.

For about half an hour no water fell over the falls until the wind shifted and reimbursed the ice.
In June and November of 1969 the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers also stopped the flow of water to Niagara Falls to study the accumulation of rocks at the bottom of the Falls. The U.S. Army Corp of Engineers are planning to stop the flow of the Falls again (only the American and Bridal Veil Falls) in 2019 for bridge construction.
