The Tunnel At Niagara Falls Ontario, Canada

Niagara Falls is well-known for its stunning waterfalls as well as its exciting and enjoyable attractions. The number of must-see attractions is rapidly growing every year, making Niagara Falls a popular and favorite travel destination for people of all ages and from all over the world. This Summer, Niagara Parks is proud to open the Tunnel at Niagara Falls Power Station, which is probably the newest experience for all Niagara Falls visitors and is an engineering marvel. Explore this engineering marvel from a unique new perspective 180 feet beneath the main generating floor as you delve into the fascinating history of the century-old power station!

Over 100 years ago, between 1901 and 1904, they could start and finish this tunnel before the plant was completed.

The freshly built observation platform provides first-ever access to a new viewpoint of the lower Niagara River with unmatched views of both the Horseshoe and American Falls.

Visitors can enter the Niagara power station, south of the Horseshoe Falls, to see the spectacular generator hall floor, which leads to a glass-enclosed elevator, descending about 54 meters with each floor lit. And next, walk the 670-meter or 2200-foot-long tunnel that runs through the former hydroelectric plant to an observation platform outdoor, where an incredible scene awaits. It would be approximately 20 to 30 minutes before you reach the edge and see the Niagara River.

.The guests or the visitors who board these elevators experience or know the different levels and all the infrastructure that has been installed that is required in the power generating process.

ABOUT THIS PROJECT AND WHEN IT STARTED

This project started when the whole world shut down during the pandemic COVID-19 period beginning in March 2020. Still, despite this biggest hurdle, the Ontario Government had granted it a $25 million loan to save the $2.4 billion Niagara Falls tourism industry.

In the first year of COVID, Niagara Parks had 500 employees working on this project and, surprisingly, completed this within budget and on time.

Now, this place will also become a world-class attraction for the efforts to add it as a supplement for all Niagara Falls visitors.

HOW YOU FEEL INSIDE THE TUNNEL

You go down these elevators as if you are in a penstock, and you land in the wheel pit where the water would drop and start this journey out through the tunnel and out to the Niagara River. Here you get the entire experience of, phase by phase, how the water reaches its destination, the Niagara River.

The Niagara Parks has installed various interpretive panels along the 2200 feet massive brick-lined tunnel.

The discarded water from the power plant passed through this tunnel, an engineering marvel, on its way back to the Niagara River.

Today, visitors are welcomed by a concrete path that is open to all rather than raging waves.

You take your time observing everything from the start to the end of the tunnel and learn more about the construction of the tunnel. It has been built authentically for all visitors. It is accessible and safe for all the public who plan to visit the tunnel.

THE NEW VIEWPOINT

The end of the tunnel provides a spectacular experience for all the visitors. A 65-feet viewing platform has been created to see the Niagara River very closely with the Hornblower moving in it. You can feel, smell and touch the water of the river. That is how you feel when you are in this area of the tunnel.

For more than a century, the tunnel was used as an outlet for the water to produce hydropower.

You will go down the tunnel on the same route as the water, arriving at an observation platform where the tunnel empties into the Niagara River.

IN THE POWER STATION

This experience should not be missed as it offers an extraordinary opportunity to participate in an exciting revival and learn about this renowned structure’s fascinating past and heritage. Learn about the pioneers who created it and the employees who kept it going for over a century.

This 115-year-old engineering masterpiece is brought back to life by harnessing the tremendous energy of Horseshoe Falls to create an engaging and instructive experience that showcases both its incredible history and distinctive architectural elements.

OPEN TO ALL VISITORS:
