ROBERT OVERACKER
1995
(Died)
On October 1, 1995, Robert Overacker, a 39-year-old man from Camarillo, California, decided to challenge the Niagara River and the Horseshoe Falls riding on a jet ski.
Entering the Niagara River upstream from the falls, he rode up to the brink of the Horseshoe Falls. Here, he ignited a rocket-propelled parachute strapped to his back that was supposed to quickly deploy and allow him to land safely into the river below the Horseshoe Falls, where he could be rescued.
Unfortunately, the parachute was not tethered to his body and fell away as it deployed. The tragedy was witnessed by his brother and a friend. He fell to his death in the water below. His body was recovered by the staff of Maid of the Mist.
