Self Guided Colosseum Tour – Skip The Queue

The Colosseum, known as the Flavian Amphitheater, stands as an imposing amphitheater within Rome, a generous gift from the Flavian emperors to the Roman people.

Commencing its construction sometime between C.E. 70 and 72 during the reign of Emperor Vespasian, this grand structure unfolded almost a decade later. Evolving over time, it measured an immense 189 by 156 meters (620 by 513 feet), towering four stories high.

Impressively, it featured eighty entrances: seventy-six for the audience, two for event participants, and a pair reserved exclusively for the emperor’s use. This multitude of entryways proved necessary as the Colosseum boasted a maximum capacity exceeding 50,000 spectators.

Upon its grand opening, Emperor Titus marked the occasion with a lavish celebration encompassing one hundred days of exhilarating gladiatorial contests—a tradition where emperors were a frequent presence.

Emperor Commodus even stepped into the arena himself on hundreds of occasions. Beyond the battles, this grand arena also played host to dramatic performances, historical reenactments, and the somber spectacle of public executions.

Over time, the Roman fascination with these events waned, and the Colosseum suffered neglect and damage, particularly due to earthquakes during the fifth century C.E. By the 20th century, nearly two-thirds of the original structure had succumbed to the ravages of time.

Nonetheless, a determined restoration project launched in the 1990s breathed new life into the Colosseum, transforming it into one of Rome’s premier modern-day attractions, drawing millions of visitors annually.
