Visit the Herschell Carrousel Manufacturing Museum in North Tonawanda, New York, which is only 25 minutes from Niagara Falls, NY, and have fun the way Americans did 100 years ago.
One of the last remaining wooden carrousel systems in the US is the museum. The structure now has a sizable carving studio, a woodworking studio, a paint studio, a storage space, an upholstery studio, a machine studio, and a roundhouse where carrousels were put together and tested before being shipped. The complex, which consists of seven connected buildings, previously held all of the Allan Herschell Company's industrial units. It is included on the National and New York State Registers of Historic Sites. Enjoy everything inside, from sparkling carousels to academic archives.
A 40-foot-diameter historical carrousel with 36 hand-carved horses and more than 580 lights can be found in the Children's Gallery, along with a smaller Kiddie Carrousel made of 1940s aluminium. See the Kiddieland Testing Park Exhibit as well, which includes four restored children's attractions from the factory's baby boomer era, along with a picnic pavilion and entrance building.
There is a 'D' band organ in the Artizan style. A unique exhibit that demonstrates the process used to create carrousel music is the Wurlitzer Music Roll Department. See how wood blocks were carved into horses for the carrousels in the woodcarving workshop. Also, the Lockman Collection showcases the evolution of carrousel animals over a 60-year period. Make sure to visit the gift shop before leaving.
