The canal has been extensively used for leisure activities for the past century despite being constructed as a military project to create a secure connection between Montreal and Kingston. The Rideau system, one of the oldest continually running canals in North America, was recognised as a Canadian Heritage River in 2000. It has 24 manually controlled lock stations. In 2007, the canal received the UNESCO World Heritage designation.
