    The Welland Canal

The Welland Canal, located in Ontario, Canada, serves as a vital ship canal connecting Lake Ontario and Lake Erie. As a crucial segment of the St. Lawrence Seaway and Great Lakes Waterway, it plays a pivotal role in maritime transportation. Stretching across the Niagara Peninsula from Port Weller to Port Colborne, the canal enables ships to navigate the Niagara Escarpment and bypass the majestic Niagara Falls. Serving approximately 3,000 ships annually, it facilitates the transportation of a staggering 40,000,000 tons of cargo. The Welland Canal's significance extends beyond its role in shipping. It has played a major part in the growth and development of Toronto, Ontario, acting as a gateway for goods from bustling Great Lakes ports like Cleveland, Detroit, and Chicago, as well as industrial hubs in the United States and Ontario. These goods were often transferred to ocean-going vessels in the port of Montreal or Quebec City for international shipping. The Welland Canal's superiority became evident as it outshone narrower canals in the region, including the Trent-Severn Waterway and, notably, the Erie Canal. By providing a shorter and more direct connection to Lake Erie, it surpassed the Erie Canal's route, which linked the Atlantic and Lake Erie through New York City and Buffalo, New York. Explore the remarkable Welland Canal, witness its impressive operations, and delve into its rich history. Admission tickets are free, allowing you to embark on a fascinating journey through this engineering marvel.

    Niagara River Recreation Trail

The Niagara River is a majestic waterway that flows north from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario, serving as a natural boundary between the province of Ontario in Canada (to the west) and the state of New York in the United States (to the east). The origin of the river's name has been a subject of debate, with various theories proposed. One theory suggests that it derives from the name of the Niagagarega people, a branch of the Native Neutral Confederacy who inhabited the region according to French maps from the late 17th century. Another theory suggests that it stems from the Iroquois town of Ongniaahra, meaning point of land cut in two, as described by George R. Stewart. Stretching approximately 58 kilometers (36 miles), the Niagara River encompasses the renowned Niagara Falls within its course. Over the past 12,000 years, the falls have gradually shifted upstream from the Niagara Escarpment, resulting in the creation of a remarkable gorge below the cascades. Today, the river's flow has been redirected for hydroelectric power generation, leading to a significant reduction in the erosion rate. Immerse yourself in the awe-inspiring beauty and rich history of the Niagara River as it winds its way through captivating landscapes and showcases the breathtaking Niagara Falls. Experience the natural wonders and profound geological changes that have shaped this iconic waterway.
